Convention News The 2010 Maryland Holstein Convention was held on Friday, March 12 with many Holstein members and friends in attendance. A business meeting was conducted during the day while Junior members toured Dairy-Maid-Dairy and the Frederick Veterinary Lab, two ag-educational facilities in the heart of Frederick County. During the meeting, new officers were elected as Donna Myers of New Windsor passed the president’s gavel on to David Lease of Union Bridge. Doug Seidel of Queenstown stepped into the vice president office. National Holstein Director Jimmy Burdette of Mercersburg, Pa. gave a presentation on judging qualifications, prefix retirement and other Holstein regulations and programs.

Dr. Ray Nebel, senior reproductive and dairy herd management specialist for Select Sires, Plain City, Ohio was the featured speaker. Prior to his employment at Select Sires, Dr. Nebel was a professor at Virginia Tech for 20 years where he received his PhD in reproductive physiology. His topic on “Estrous and Synchronization” refreshed producers and industry persons on how to manage the reproduction methods in their herds. He also introduced Select’s new technology on heat detection which is to be advertised at the next World Dairy Expo, Madison, Wis.

The 2009 Outstanding Maryland Holstein Dairyman’s Award was presented by Gary Dell of the Breed Improvement Committee to Red Vision Genetics, Paul Yoder and Calvin Schrock of Oakland. Doty Remsburg to the 2009 Distinguished Service Award winners, Buzz and Dottie White of Hydes for their contributions to the Maryland Holstein Association.
